Are you drunk from eating Bread? Gluten intolerance makes you appear Drunk?

I was addicted to bread when I found out I was gluten intolerant. Gluten free bread is not the same  “high” you get from eating gluten bread. When I ate the bread, I was glassy eyed, dark circles under my eyes. I squinted because I couldn’t open my eyes all the way, because it was probably a high blood sugar as well. In fact, people were always accusing me of looking tired, or even drunk. One should not look drunk in high school. In fact I was asked so often I said yes sometimes. Because I was asked four or five times a day, every single day. “Are you tired, are you drunk?” My eyes physically hurt. If I didn’t eat the bread, I had nothing else to eat. It was the 1980s. There was no gluten free anything. The only thing I could do, was self medicate. I did that by eating the inside of the sandwich and not eating the bread.  Frequently, I would still be hungry so I would eat half the bread. The rest of my lunch was still gluten, like  pretzels or cake or something. If I was hungry I ate that as well. If there was anything out of my lunch to skip, it was the bread, but sometimes, I was still hungry. the day after eating the bread, felt like I was punched in the stomach when it hit certain areas of my stomach. In order to self medicate for that, I would eat again. I would eat a little bit of gluten. I ate a cracker, or a bite...

The iron lung is still here, it’s just not made of iron. Polio never left.

This is a modern Iron lung. Your doctor told you there was no iron lung anymore, and technically yes, because it’s not made of iron, but instead it’s modernized into stainless steel. It’s not called an iron lung, because now it’s called a negative pressure ventilator. If you want to make something go away, change the name, and poof! It’s gone.   Don’t let your doctor tell you how the polio vaccine saved everyone from the iron lung.  It’s still here, but made of stainless steel. It used to look like this:   You still think polio is gone.   It too has a new name, and you may have already been exposed. I am doing a series of blogs on just polio. Find out why being exposed is no big deal. Don’t believe me. Add your email to my mailing list and find out more. Share...

I made her day by praising her strength-Wheelchair hopefulness.

I’ll share a story. When my kids were in elementary school. We saw a little girl in a wheelchair on their way home from school. The kids asked, why is that girl in a wheel chair. I said, “She’s got super strong arms because she can’t use her legs. The little girl just beamed. I’m sure no one had ever said that to her before.  She gave me a thumbs up. I could see how excited she was to hear me say that. She was used to people talking about how disabled she was or something. If you see someone is a wheelchair, talk about their strength instead of their weakness. Make their day. Share...

How to fix public education.

This is Betsy Devos the head of the Department of Education. I write this as a longer post to express how I would improve public education.  Everyone having debates about which type is better really depends on the school and on your child.  So let’s see what Betsy Devos actually does. Trump wants to get rid of federal interference in public education. Local control is a good thing I think, as long as it includes my kids and yours. FAPE is a fancy acronym in my book and it stands for Free and Public Education. That means that kids on the spectrum still get access to education no matter their circumstances. I also know many kids who home school because their public or private school did not fill their needs. I am mixed about this issue. If I were head of the dept of education here is what I would do assuming I had funding. Make sure that if you home school, private or public that you get proper resources and money. I know my sons school is underfunded because his home schools that are supposed to allocate Money to his school doesn’t and because of that he doesn’t have access to the programs electives and clubs he should which in case would be a career.   Share...
